Make your Own Show Stopping Wall Art

Alina de Albergaria

They say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and if you have visited my site, you already know that one of those “trees" is my mother. An equally important tree is my beloved uncle, who carried a sketchbook wherever he went because in his words: “one should always cultivate one’s passion”. While he sold many of his pastel, watercolor and oil paintings, he earned a living as a highly respected and well liked tailor in Caracas, outfitting doctors, lawyers and celebrities, until he retired in Spain several decades later.

I lived with him and his family one summer, spending most of my time in his atelier with my cousins, making clothes for our dolls and dresses for ourselves. Flash forward a few decades and my own daughters find joy in creating beautiful things for themselves or their room.

These rooster feathered beauties are African juju hats. I discovered them while staying at a friends' stunning home in Harbour Island and couldn't keep my eyes off of them.

Inspired by her, I embarked on a mission to secure two perfect fuschia ones for my daughters’ room. However, at $600 each, I decided to get to work and fabricate  these with my girls, which proved to be remarkably easy and a ton of fun. I discovered Songbird, a website which detailed exactly how to make these playful hats, and for about $200, my daughters and I made a pair of whimsical hats that would make my mother and uncle proud. Here is that fabulous link!
